Jane Austen is one of Britain’s most fondly regarded authors, well- known for her witty observations on the world of love and marriage in the eighteenth/nineteenth Century and her humorous presentation of exasperating relatives.

Our day will begin in the sleepy Hampshire village of Chawton, home to the Austen family during Jane’s most authorially productive years. Step through the doorway of the eighteenth century and into Austen’s family home where she lived, following the death of her Reverend father, with her mother and doting sister Cassandra. The house has been maintained to resemble domestic life as Jane would have known it and displays include: clothing, furniture and paintings belonging to the family, plus some of her personal possessions and jewellery. It was in this charming, yet simple, cottage, that Austen sat by a small table, still in position today, and wrote’ Mansfield Park,’ ‘ Emma’ and ‘Persuasion.’

Upon leaving the house, students may wish to visit the gift shop, where copies of her novels may be purchased, as well as many trinkets featuring her most dashing of hero’s Mr Darcy as well as filmic versions which include modern day hero Colin Firth…

Continuing our journey back to Austen’s Winchester, we will then amble further into the local village churchyard where side by side, the graves of Jane’s mother and Sister can be found. We will end this part of the trip with a visit to the local tea rooms, to enjoy a well- deserved rest and of course that quintessentially English cream tea.

Following our lunch, we will return to Winchester City centre, to finish our day with a visit to Austen’s final resting place, in the historic Winchester Cathedral. As well as taking a stroll through the quiet grounds, to view the charming exterior of the town house that Austen was moved to in her final days.
