ELT courses in the heart of Englan

Testimonials - what our students think

Charles Dickens is considered one of Britain’s most influential writers, known for his fictional writing on nineteenth century social reform, as well as his witty writing style and colourful characters.

To celebrate his 200th birthday in 2012, we are offering a Discover Dickens excursion that will include a journey to Kent, one of his most beloved counties, often described as The Garden of England.  The county remained significant to Dickens throughout his life and days before he died he described the city of Rochester as ‘surpassingly beautiful.’  Dickens and his family lived in the town of Chatham which today plays host to a truly authentic Victorian experience called Dickens World and our first visit of the day.

We will travel back to the murky shadows of nineteenth century England to re-discover some of his best loved characters and see the sights of recreated scenes from Victorian England, as Ebenezer Scrooge, Miss Havisham and Oliver Twist would have known it. Following our visit to Dickens World, we will visit the neighbouring Cathedral City of Rochester, where we will take a walk around the Norman Cathedral, which features in many of Dickens’ novels and then over the cobbled floor to the nearby twelfth century Rochester Castle, both sites of archaeological interest and much loved by Dickens himself. In fact it was his wish to be buried in the Cathedral grounds, but upon his death, it was thought more befitting to lay his body to rest in the poets’ corner of Westminster Abbey. There will be a period of free time at our stop in Rochester, where students can take in the quaint architecture or explore the charming high street at their leisure.
